Smut (fungus – Ustilago cynodonis)
Host Grass: Hybrid Bermuda(Cynodon dactylon), Common Bermuda
Cause and Symptoms: Smut galls replace seed in the spike. The inflorescence (flower) is often distorted.
Control and Management: Since the fungus causes a systemic infection, fungicides are not effective. Control by close mowing and proper fertilization, which keeps the grass in a vegetative growing condition, preventing seed head development.
